Abstract:
The School Management Quality Assurance System has been proposed by Chile´s Ministry of Education as a tool to support a bottom up approach to school improvement in Chile. The system proposes that all school actors must actively participate in order to feel ownership of the school’s problems and their resolution Through interviews conducted in six school implementing the system, data regarding perceptions of participation were produced. Results showed that teachers’ perceptions about their participation in the self-evaluation process of the SACG were mediated by how they described the school’s opportunities for participation. Contrasting opportunities were associated with contrasting goal orientation. These findings contribute to an understanding of how school culture influences the implementation of initiatives generated at a central level.
