Session Type: Symposium
Many scholars (e.g., Author, 2008; Lortie, 1975) note our lack of shared language in education, yet few have empirically investigated the issue. While other fields, such as nursing (McCloskey & Bulechek, 2000) and aviation (Heflin et al., 1956), have strategically addressed issues of professional terminology, we have made little headway in education. The proposed symposium features a cross-institutional panel of scholars concerned with issues of professional language in education. These scholars will discuss what we know, and what we need to know, about the state of professional communication in three contexts: research, teacher education, and schools. The audience will gain a deeper understanding of specific communication challenges within and across these settings, as well as fruitful directions for future research.
