Brief Description

The panel will analyze Jewish pogroms and self-defense in the Russian Empire and Poland in the early twentieth century. Konrad Zielinski in his paper “Anti-Jewish Riots and Pogroms in the Kingdom of Poland During the First Year of WWI” will explore the reasons for anti-Jewish violence and Jewish pogroms during the first year of World War I in Poland and Lithuania. Artur Markowski will discuss in his paper “Heroic, Young and Sacrificial. Jewish Self-defense in "Pogroms Histories" in Russia at the Beginning of the Twentieth Century” the images of Jewish self-defense during pogroms in Russia at the beginning of the twentieth century that were created by quasi-historical publications issued by various, most often liberal groups in Russia and abroad before 1917. Sylwia Kuzma-Markowska will discuss in her paper “Eastern European Jewish Manhood Revisited: Jewish Self-defense and Muscular Judaism in the Early Twentieth Century” if the concept of Muscular Judaism should be applied to Jewish self-defense created during pogroms in Eastern Europe in the first two decades of the twentieth century. The panel will bring new insights for reasons and consequences of anti-Jewish violence in Russia and Poland in the early twentieth century.
