Session Submission Type: Roundtable
We propose a historiographical 'state of the field' discussion for this roundtable, with participants addressing the fundamental questions 'where are we now, and where are we going?' in historical understandings and interpretations of the Russian Revolution and the Soviet Union. Dominant and developing trends will be identified and critiqued, with some predictions and recommendations made for the future. The politics of these positions – significantly those prompted by the Fall of Communism both in terms of archival revelations and historians' own beliefs – will also be directly addressed. The speakers have been chosen so that their areas of expertise range broadly across the twentieth century.
