Session Submission Type: Roundtable
This roundtable discussion deals with the role and the varied uses of Russian 19th-century periodicals in scholarship produced by literature specialists and historians. The participants draw on their past and current research in order to contemplate the range of questions and scholarly methodologies that the inclusion of periodicals in a given study might prompt. Of particular interest are such topics as the interplay between the literary and the journalistic, the positions and strategies of specific 19th-century litterateurs vis-à-vis contemporary periodicals, the historical reconstruction of readerly habits, and the rise and constitution of reading and political publics. Because a number of these questions are treated by multiple participants from a variety of disciplinary and methodological perspectives (e.g., media studies, microhistory, cultural studies, cultural history, genre theory), we believe that a roundtable would be the most appropriate forum for our discussion.
