Towards a History of Reading in Modern Russia

Brief Description

The round-table will explore methodological, conceptual and practical aspects of an ongoing project “History of Reading in Modern Russia” (to be published in 2018). Participants will address various issues of the history of reading in modern Russia, such as periodization (the existence of “reading revolutions” in late eighteenth- and late twentieth-century Russia), the role of educational and cultural institutions (schools, libraries, censorship, etc.) and their impact on Russian reading public, the influence of various publishing forms (tolstye zhurnaly, chapbooks, etc.) and reading practices on the reception of specific texts, both Russian and foreign. The round-table format is optimal for the discussion of interrelated issues and questions raised by the work in progress
