Brazil Case Study

Mon, March 9, 8:00 to 9:30am, Washington Hilton, Floor: Terrace Level, Fairchild West

Abstract

NORRAG will make a case for why educational strategies are important in situations of urban violence and highlight preliminary results from its mapping initiative in Brazil. These findings will allow for insights into the conditions under which education might seemingly mitigate or foster urban violence.

Since it is highly likely that two of the post-2015 Sustainable Development Goals will revolve around inclusive and equitable education/opportunities and safe and resilient urban spacesNORRAG will address this within the Brazil Case Study. They will provide context on Brazil as well as answer questions on: How does urbanization affect education? Can education (broadly conceived to include training) foster the creation of safer and more sustainable cities? What educational strategies are available to deal with urban violence? With these questions in mind, the presentation will make a case for why educational strategies are important in situations of urban violence, and highlight preliminary results from a mapping of programmes and initiatives currently implemented in Brazil.
