Abstract

The main centres of the Greek revival on the East Coast of the Baltic Sea were the Academy in Vilnius, the Academy in Dorpat (Tartu) and the Gymnasia in Riga, Mitau (Jelgava) and Reval (Tallinn), as well as the court in Mitau. Our main sources for this revival are various manuals, school editions of Greek authors, study programs and poetry and prose written by scholars. This paper focuses on special features of humanist Greek text corpora from Early Modern Estonia, Livonia and Curonia, according to the school level (elementary, advanced), period and political situation. In these texts it is possible to distinguish German influence (in the 16th and 17th century Estonia and Livonia), Swedish influence (in 1640-1656 and 1690-1710 at the Academy of Tartu) and combined German and Polish influence (in Mitau). These influences are mainly reflected in the preferences for certain genres.
