In this case, students are required to utilize Microsoft Excel® to complete three key audit steps in: (1) data manipulation and validation checks for transaction testing, (2) pivot table construction for three separate footnote disclosures, and (3) recalculating the client’s aging schedule. The primary purpose of the case is to provide students with an audit setting such as they might expect as an intern or entry level auditor in order to perform audit procedures and prepare audit work papers. The case is appropriate for undergraduate and beginning graduate auditing and assurance courses, as well as for other accounting courses in a classroom and online environment. The primary objectives are to (1) perform selected audit procedures using Microsoft Excel®, (2) strengthen students’ Microsoft Excel® skills in advanced functions such as pivot tables, VLOOKUP and if/then statements, (3) develop students’ analytical and critical thinking skills in an audit setting, and (4) create audit work papers. Student feedback has been very positive. Several instructors have implemented the case in auditing and other accounting courses as an opportunity for students to utilize Microsoft Excel® functions in an audit setting and to develop the skills expected of entry-level professionals.
