Setting the "Accounting Hook": Using Humor and an Active Learning Classroom to Recruit and Retain Accounting Majors

Abstract

This presentation details with examples and handouts how to successfully employ humorous situations and pertinent classroom handouts to hook students on accounting. Interlacing humor with course materials grabs and holds student attention. Using well designed handouts helps to solidify understanding by immediately getting students involved in the accounting material. This leads to better retention by the students and builds confidence in the students that they can actually do the work. A side benefit has been higher student ratings of both the courses and the instructor. Discussion, examples, and handouts will be provided.
