Evaluating Effectiveness of a Learning Experience in Introductory Accounting

Abstract

Classes don’t always go as planned. Embrace the unexpected ways learning unfolds as both a teacher and an action researcher! Get motivated to do your own action research project! You won’t always get what you want, but you just might find you get what you (and your students) need. This session will employ storytelling as an innovative fun way to illustrate how the spirals of action research unfold in interesting ways when we research our teaching and our students’ learning. As an experienced and enthusiastic accounting educator/action researcher tells the story you will be encouraged to feel the emotion and drama of developing a group assignment. Celebrate discovering that the feelings associated with teaching successes and failures matter in education-based action research. Marvel at how data you’ve already collected (didn’t know you were collecting data, did you?) can be used in action research. Share the satisfaction when the data analysis reveals that doing a written group assignment improved students’ achieved technical competency. Embrace the experience of storytelling and imagine a world in which you are an action researcher improving the learning experiences created by you and your students!
