Using the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Program to Enhance Student Learning Utilizing the Pathways Vision Model

Abstract

In an effort to better prepare our students for their careers in the workforce, there has been an emphasis on the teaching of ethics in accounting and business programs. This approach suggests that an additional goal of service learning should be the development of students who are civic-minded and socially responsible. In addition, this approach enhances the perception of the study of accounting and career opportunities in accounting. Research will be presented that examines how we have successfully increased community engagement through our Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) Program. Furthermore, we will discuss the curriculum design of our VITA Program Internship in which our students have the opportunity to earn 3 credit hours.
