Logical versus Memorized, Discussion Boards and Thinking Maps

Abstract

Participants will learn about “thinking maps” a concept arguably more widely known in schools of education than in business schools. Secondarily participants will be encouraged to remind their students that much of accounting may be seen as logical with only a portion of it requiring memorization. In addition, while many are aware of the use of the discussion board/web-chat as a tool for creating a sense of community, in particular but not exclusively for online courses, most of us could still use proven examples of what works as a discussion board assignment.
In the form of a sales-pitch, this means participants will find this new knowledge of “thinking maps” a very efficient means of eliciting critical thinking from their students. Those that employ the logical versus memorized discussion with their students described in this session will find that it both helps the student and helps to open up interesting dialogues between the instructor and the student, by giving the instructor a look into each individual student’s view of logical and illogical concepts.
