Purpose: Grounded on Porter’s competitive strategy theory the purpose of this study was to explore competitive and governance strategies that Ghanaian Microfinance Bank (MFB) owners use to achieve business sustainability.
Design/methodology/approach: A qualitative method was used to capture the voices of participants through face-to-face interviews. A case study design was used to gain an in-depth understanding of the why and how some Ghanaian MFB owners lack governance and competitive strategies to achieve business sustainability.
Population: The population sample included 14 business owners and managers from six MFBs in the Greater Accra Region of Ghana. Each of these participating businesses has been in operation for more than 5 years.
Findings: Based upon interview data triangulated data sources including casual observations and documentary evidence 5 themes emerged which includes (a) cash and liquidity management, (b) capacity building, (c) monitoring, (d) compliance, and (e) corporate governance.
