Putting the Fun in Fundamentals of Accounting: Using Games in Introductory Financial Accounting Courses

Fri, October 19, 6:00 to 7:30pm, Hyatt Regency Greenwich, TBA

Abstract

This paper examines two different games that the authors have used in introductory accounting courses in order to increase student engagement, motivation and learning. The first game, Kahoot (kahoot.com), can be easily used to help students classify financial statement accounts and practice debit/credit methodology. The game employs competition among students and has received favorable feedback from students in our experiences. The second game, Jeopardy (e.g., http://www.superteachertools.us/jeopardyx/), can be easily used to help students identify account titles based on account definitions, financial statement equations, and financial ratios. The game can be used in different formats; students playing against one another in the classroom, students in teams playing against other teams, or individually outside of the classroom as a study tool. When used in the classroom, students have responded positively to the use of both games in improving their learning and interest in accounting.
