The FSP: An Evergreen and Efficiently Administered Financial Statement Project that Provides a Unique Exposure to Earnings Management

Abstract

This paper introduces a financial statement project (“The FSP”) that integrates technical accounting skills, strategic analysis and ethics concerns embedded in the flexibility afforded by GAAP and IFRS. Unique virtues of the FSP include an ongoing timeliness, deep engagement with a real set of financial statements, a comprehensive peer review framework and multiple connections to other courses and topics in the accounting curriculum. For students, successful completion requires multiple types and instances of critical thinking. An efficacy survey indicates that the project has been well received.
