Bitcoin, specifically, and digital cryptocurrencies, generally, have become a hot topic in the culture at large and heavily debated in the business world. Some think of digital currencies and their associated technology as a passing fad while others think they will do nothing less than revolutionize business transactions.
This case is meant to introduce students to digital currencies, blockchain technology and how businesses are adapting to this new environment. To do this, students will have to examine how government institutions and regulating bodies are treating digital currencies.
This case places the student in the role of a senior accountant in a large corporation. The student is tasked with writing a research memo on digital currencies and addressing the risks and rewards of her company accepting a digital currency as a form of payment from customers. The case uses an embedded mentor character to guide the student through the research and writing process.
The student will make use of Internal Revenue Service (IRS) and Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) documents, Financial Statements of large corporations, popular press items, and a law review article.
