Effective Learning Strategies (ELS) Poster Session: An XBRL Hands-on Tagging Case Study

Fri, May 1, 3:25 to 3:55pm, Wyndham Playhouse Square, TBA

Abstract

The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) 2009 XBRL Reporting Mandate requires that all publicly traded companies listed on U.S. stock exchanges are required to file their financial statements (Forms 10-K and 10-Q) in eXtensible Business Reporting Language (XBRL) tagged format. As of March 2015, more than 10,000 U.S. filers are required to comply with the mandate and over 118,000 filings have been submitted. The purpose of this poster session is present a case study to teach students how to comply with the mandate by explaining the structure of XBRL and its terminology, requirements of the XBRL 2009 XBRL Reporting Mandate, the linkage between the XBRL tagging process and the FASB’s Accounting Standards Codification, how to use the YETI tool to choose XBRL tags, and how to tag financial statements and detailed footnotes using a hands-on workshop approach using non-proprietary software and resources.
