A Graduate Accounting Communication Course

Fri, April 8, 3:25 to 3:55pm, DoubleTree Cleveland East-Beachwood, TBA

Abstract

Several state boards of accountancy have recently added an educational requirement for an accounting communication course to be eligible to sit for the Uniform Certified Public Accounting Exam. Because accounting and finance professionals are responsible for effectively communicating accounting and finance information, this course is important to development fundamental skills such as writing, speaking, preparing and giving presentations, and summarizing complex financial information. Additionally, technology is playing an increasingly important role in the accounting and finance professions’ communication toolbox and strategy. An accounting communications course prepares students to be able to manage and communicate information, a critical skill for career development. This poster session presents Regis University’s Masters of Science in Accounting accounting communications course. The strategies used in the course to achieve the following course objectives will be explained:
• Practice basic writing mechanics for financial and accounting communications;
• Explain business writing principles, including organization, clarity, and conciseness;
• Exchange technical information and ideas with co-workers and other professionals;
• Prepare documents and make presentations that are concise, accurate, and supportive of the subject matter; document and cross-reference work performed and conclusions reached in an accurate manner;
• Assist clients in recognizing and understanding implications of critical business issues by providing recommendations and informed opinions;
• Identify factors required to develop a comprehensive financial communication strategy including earnings guidance, meeting the needs of financial information intermediaries (i.e., the press and analysts), and strategies for financial communications.
• Explain the statutory requirements for public company communication for accounting and finance;
• Prepare and present written work products in the form of memos, letters, opinions, and reports – such as audit reports – to others.
