Using CPA Review Materials in and Intermediate Accounting Course to Increase Student Learning and Confidence in Taking the CPA Exam

Abstract

During fall semester 2017, three sections of Intermediate Accounting I were taught at two separate universities. One university is located in Washington and the second university is located in Pennsylvania. The instructors used the same textbook, Intermediate Accounting 9th (Spiceland, Sepe, Nelson, & Thomas) and administered identical exams. In addition, the instructors partnered with Roger CPA review and Becker CPA review to grant student complimentary access for the 17 week semester. Only 2 of the 3 sections of students were granted access to the CPA review materials intentionally so that one of the sections acted as the control group. At the end of each chapter, quizzes were administered through the Becker website. Quizzes included actual CPA exam questions and simulations. Throughout the semester students were also assigned Roger CPA videos to watch that mirrored the textbook material. Student surveys were administered at the beginning and end of the semester to gather data about demographics, Principles of Financial Accounting grades, attitudes toward the CPA exam, and reflections about the Roger CPA videos.
