MOOCs (massive open online courses) are typically free online courses with lectures and automated quizzes and testing. The pillar of the MOOC is that it offers high quality educational opportunities for increasing numbers of learners across the world. Although there are concerns about the effectiveness of MOOCs, they have proliferated and the number of course offerings continue to grow. Faculty perceptions about their use in the undergraduate curriculum at four-year colleges have been well researched. Given the importance of community colleges to our educational system, this study expands that research to the community college level. We found that while respondents were comfortable with online classes offered by their own institutions, they had concerns about assessments and student outcomes relating to the adoption of MOOCs in degree programs. However, community college faculty saw a place for MOOCs in non-degree programs or as a supplement to traditional college level courses.
