Summary

Lack of self-congruency among different possible L2 selves can lead to an ambivalence or lack of motivation in learning EFL. In a longitudinal study, interviews with 29 Japanese students investigated the changes in motivational self-congruency in different stages of education, from junior high school through graduate school.
