This study investigated 2 non-native ESL writing instructors and 4 international students taking freshmen composition in a large U.S. university to examine teachers’ awareness of students’ needs. Results showed that without rigid institutional constraints and with strong peer support, teachers were effective in meeting students' needs and expectations.
