The Role of Archaeology in Cultural Preservation: Native Latvian and Native American Experiences

Abstract

Archaeology plays a significant role in national identity and politics. In Latvia most archaeology remained in the hands of native Balts, even during times of political dominance by non-Latvians. Thus, in Latvia archaeology is a part of Latvian culture, much as German archaeology is part of German culture, Greek archaeology is part of Greek culture. In North America, until recently, archaeology was dominated by archaeologists who were members of the dominant non-Indian culture. Although that is often still the case, in recent years Native Americans have become much more involved in North American archaeology. With that involvement, interpretations of older Native American cultures and their development is undergoing substantial revision. The European models used to interpret the past have been supplanted by ones based in Native American traditions and practices. The changes include the language used to describe past cultures and places. As the revisions take hold, a rich Native American archaeology is emerging, one that is supportive of the national identities of the many different Indian nations.
