Whereas most modern definitions of indigeneity are grounded in socio-economic circumstances of postcolonial aboriginal minorities, this perspective is paradoxically both too restrictive and too permissive. Based on my work with indigenous communities on three continents, I will demonstrate that there are other common dimensions that are indicative of indigeneity. Finally I will discuss the practical consequences of redefined indigeneity.
