Community Outreach Strategies in Southeast Asian Archaeology Fieldwork

Sat, April 2, 10:45am to 12:45pm, Washington State Convention Center, Floor: 6th Floor, Room 604

Abstract

Drawing on lessons learned over 20 years of fieldwork in Indonesia, Timor Leste, the Philippines, and the USA, this paper presents various ways of engaging local communities in archaeological projects, including successes and failures, short and long term. Also discussed are overall aims of community-based archaeological research, and ways in which local histories can impact the reception of researchers in fieldwork situations, as well as ways in which archaeological research can impact on local histories and those who create and use them.
