Session Submission Type: Organized Panel Proposal Application
This panel will discuss about the current states of media in Indonesia and how it reflects the socio-political changes in the region. It elaborates three main changes in media orientation in depicting Chinese Indonesian minority and marginalized groups in film, Islam as the majority religion on television, and negotiation of power relations in a newspaper owned by a member of minority group. Democratisation and globalization which take place due to the fall of authoritarian regime have redefined competing identities and ideologies and the boundaries of minorities in Indonesian public sphere which involve Islam, Chinese Indonesian, nationalism.
