The purpose of this research study was to examine the influence of protocols on asynchronous discussions in large online classes. Three protocols were developed and implemented in a video-streaming course with 450 undergraduate students. Our goal was to explore the potential of protocols to enhance the social, cognitive, and teaching presences of students engaging in online discussions. These findings may enable educators to provide more interaction and richer learning in these challenging, large-size online courses.
