The construction of proxy variables representing learners’ behaviors in online forums: Theory-driven educational data mining

Short Description

Despite the growing interest in online forum, learners posed numerous difficulties in such participation. Hence, this study proposes a new strategy to construct proxy variables representing learners’ behaviors in online forums. Accordingly, the number of postings and the regularity of the visit interval were found to predict learners’ performance. Implications for both the field of educational data mining and learning analytics was discussed in order to have an independent foundation away from the business realm.
