This paper reviews empirical literature on scaffolding computer-supported collaborative problem solving with a focus on tools supporting cognition, social interaction and affect. In the cognitive dimension, scaffolding tools structure the problem solving process for the learners and support important metacognitive activities. In the socio-relational dimension, scaffolding tools encourage students’ interactions to establish shared goals, negotiate strategies, and coordinate all activities. Research on supporting affect in collaborative problem solving is still in its infancy.
