Using ADDIE and Systems Thinking as the Framework for Developing a MOOC: A Case Study

Higher education institutional leaders, educators, and instructional designers will benefit from this session as they look behind the scenes of how systems thinking and the ADDIE model was used to design and develop one of the first MOOCs at a mid-sized southeastern university. Our case study will cover the rationale for offering MOOCs, the process of MOOC design and development, from conceptualization to launch and evaluation directly from the instructor’s perspectives. The session will explore the contemporary issues surrounding MOOCs on both the macro university level and micro instructor level. The design and development of a MOOC comes with many challenges and questions, which will be discussed. Discussion will include how the ADDIE model can be used as a valuable process to bring about user centered, meaningful, and well-designed MOOCs in a time in which both MOOCs and systemic change are being called for in higher education.
