This article describes educational research methodologies being used in the investigation and evaluation of desktop virtual world environments in higher education. Utilizing a framework developed from Ellis’ research framework on innovations (2005) and Reeves and Hedberg’s research goals (2003) in another publication (Beck & Perkins, 2014), we provide a detailed case study of how to use the framework to select research methods and goals that may have the maximum intended impact.
