Digital Science Notebooks to Enhance Elementary Students’ Scientific Practices

Fri, Nov 7, 8:00 to 9:00am, 3rd Level, Clearwater

Short Description

This study investigates the potential of a tablet-based note-taking application to enhance students’ science practices in comparison to a traditional, paper-based notebook. Two teachers and 40 students in Grades 2-5 from a charter school in Hawaii participated in this study. During the 2013-2014 academic year, students' paper-based science notebooks and digital science notebooks were collected. Interviews with teachers and students, as well as class observations were also conducted and analyzed. This study discusses the note-taking tools available in digital-science notebooks, such as handwriting and drawing, audio recording, instant pictures and images insertion, and how they might facilitate students’ writing for science practices.
