The instructional design field is culturally dynamic. Instructional designers (IDs) constantly seek professional development (PD). Online Community of Practice (CoP) has allowed IDs to participate in PD without constrained by geographical and temporal limitations. This formative evaluation examined semi-annual, CoP-based PD held in Canvas Learning Management System (LMS) for free. Results show that the lack of time, unfamiliarity with other IDs, and less-favored activities influence ID’s participation. Implications for improving the CoP-based PD are discussed.
