The concept of chemical bonding is fundamental to understanding chemistry, but the learning outcomes are not always attained. Addressing this issue, our challenge was to create a learning object (LO), in simulation format, that invited students’ interest yet was challenging. The design team carefully conducted analysis, learned appropriate strategies from literature, and selected suitable technologies to design and develop an engaging LO to teach students with differing prior knowledge the basics of chemical bonding.
