This systematic literature review discusses the concept of data visualization literacy and 40 years of empirical research exploring effective visualization techniques, the typical errors people make when comprehending data visualizations, and instructional methods to support data visualization literacy in education. Implications include a) advancing and disseminating research on seductive visualizations, b) exploring individual differences in attention and cognition, and c) designing technology-based instruction for data visualization literacy in K-12 mathematics.
