One benefit of open pedagogy is that it fosters a shift in power dynamics from instructors toward a more student-empowered environment. Instructors, however, may view increased student agency negatively; decreasing their ability to choose what is taught. Instructors may also have implicit beliefs about students not aligned with student-centered approaches. This session will discuss these dynamics in relation to a first-year course based on open pedagogy where instructors took varied approaches to student empowerment.
