This study explored the development of intercultural competence or cultural intelligence (CQ) in the Japanese higher education context, specifically attending to the design of instruction and the ensuing learning process in a blended environment. Findings consider the design of effective blended courses that seeks to cultivate CQ explicitly, with further implications for the theory and design of culturally informed educational practice, and developing appropriate online pedagogies that extend to include the design of LMSs.
