This session will present research from a study which examined the effect of autonomy on learning while learners read informational text within a game-based learning environment (GBLE), CRYSTAL ISLAND. Results indicated those with limited autonomy learned more than those with full autonomy. Learners afforded full autonomy exhibited greater joy, anger, confusion, and frustration evidence scores than those with restricted autonomy. Implications for designing GBLEs to account for emotions and autonomy simultaneously will be discussed.
