We performed a systematic literature review to explore the learning effectiveness of conversational virtual agents (called chatbots) revealed in educational studies. A purposeful sampling method was performed to select primary studies that measured learners’ learning performance when they used conversational agents. The reported results were analyzed to assess the overall effectiveness regarding the reported learning gains and calculate the effect size. In addition, the current challenges, limitations, and potentials for future research are also discussed.
