Deficit Ideologies versus Equity Literacy in IDT Contexts

Short Description

The focus of the session will be on naming and understanding deficit ideologies, and considering the ways our practices in IDT may reinforce deficit thinking (e.g., focusing on "fixing" and making up for "deficits" projected onto marginalized people from the perspectives of dominant and oppressive culture), rather than understanding and recognizing the ways that formal systems and approaches privilege particular cultural lenses at the expense of others.
