This study explored the use of static presentation slides, hand drawn presentation content, and the ability to see and hear the instructor in video modules for online classes. The research design of this study employed an experimental procedure where volunteer participants were randomly assigned into one of four treatment groups. These four treatments included 1) the use of static presentation slides with video of the instructor, 2) dynamic freehand drawings with video of the instructor, 3) static presentation slides without video of the instructor, and 4) the use of dynamic freehand drawings without video of the instructor. These groups were compared in terms of instructor immediacy, instructor credibility, cognitive load, and learning effectiveness. The results of Analysis of Variance and Tukey post hoc analyses indicated a significant difference between treatments. The inclusion of the instructor and the dynamically drawn presentation resulted in higher levels of instructor immediacy, instructor credibility, and learning effectiveness. These results can be applied to improve social presence in online classes through effective multimedia design.
