Merging the Instructional Design Process with Learner-Centered Theory: The Holistic 4D Model

Short Description

Over the past 20 years, knowledge about learning, instructional strategies, technological tools, and ID processes has advanced considerably, but most ID process models have not kept pace. In order to update the ID process and improve its effectiveness and efficiency, we have built on funding from the U.S. Air Force to develop the Holistic 4D Model. It consists of four major activities: Define, Design, Develop, and Deploy. Innovative features include: a holistic design process, analysis-design-evaluation (ADE) cycles on different levels of design from top-level to lower-level, ADE document templates for each level, integration of learner-centered instructional theory/methods into the design process, guidance for teaching topic expertise as well as task expertise, design of holistic instructional sequences, design of non-instructional interventions, use of rapid prototyping, creation of designer objectives as well as learner objectives, replacement of abstract learner objectives with demonstration objectives whenever appropriate, and guidance for product and process evaluations.
