Critically examines the claims made about “emerging technologies” in the light of the evidence accumulated about the effects of technology on learning over the past century. Aims to clarify and define the basic elements of the instructional process. Introduces a new conceptual schema to portray the factors that impact "instructed learning," a new term to distinguish the outcomes of instruction from the outcomes of natural learning in everyday living. Also introduces a new typology of communication configurations—a way to categorize teaching-learning arrangements according to the flow of information and control among facilitator, learners, and resources. The eight identified categories of communication configurations are discussed in terms of their media formats and best practices for applying them in lesson planning. These innovative concepts are placed into historical perspective, related to the latest findings in cognitive and neuroscience research, and examined in terms of sociocultural factors.
