Short Description

Culturally-situated learning design begins by humanizing the cultural identities and the contexts of our learners. To accomplish the goal of empathetic understanding, the audience will first be engaged in writing “Where I am from” by George Ella Lyon that will prompt the audience to consider their own cultural identities, contexts, customs, and traditions. Then, the participants will be split into small groups 1) to analyze the learner characteristics and contexts that emerge from their collective written work, and 2) to discuss 3-4 culturally inclusive design principles, strategies, and tips that would inform their learning design. These universal and situational design principles, tips, and strategies will then be discussed as a whole group in the context of culturally-inclusive research (Gunawardena et al., 2019; McLaughlin & Oliver, 2000; Milheim, 2018; Neto et al., 2014). The audience will leave the session with an enhanced understanding of cultural inclusivity in culturally-situated learning design.
