Full Session: General Session
This paper surveys the design, development, implementation, and evaluation of a games development effort in Chicago. As part of a project supported by the National Science Foundation, a collectible card games was developed for teaching middle school children cybersecurity and basic computer science principles. Game-based approaches model the habits of mind and habitual actions of experts and provide culturally relevant platforms for motivating children not only to learn about these critical 21 st century areas but also to enhance motivation for going into these fields later in life. The paper also explores some of the lessons learned in this design-based research effort focusing particularly on the unique problems presented in urban contexts.
