Short Description

To date, while many educators and researchers have argued for the importance of teaching computational competencies, there is a lack of research on an effective instructional approach to promoting computational problem solving. This study aims to examine the effectiveness of two different approaches when teaching computational concepts with a block-based programming language in an online environment with a quantitative research method using a pretest-posttest randomized-group design. Participants in the study are around 110 undergraduate students enrolled in a computing and information technology online course. Two different instructional approaches (unguided inductive vs. guided inductive) were delivered in an experimental web-based instruction during each spring semester of 2020 and 2021. The study is still in progress of collecting and analyzing data for classes in 2021. Research findings and implications will be discussed in the presentation along with recommendations for future work.
