First-generation and underrepresented minority students (URM) may have greater challenges in online learning than their counterparts. Programs that combine academic and socioemotional supports can improve success rates for college students that are low-income and first-generation (Holcombe & Kezar, 2021). This literature review seeks to categorize the challenges of first-generation and URM students into the Academic Communities of Engagement (ACE) framework (Borup et. al., 2020) to help guide the continuance or creation of theoretically grounded interventions.
