In this study, an immersive VR game and an 8-week-long GBL lesson unit were created to support middle school students’ learning of science. This study uses mixed methods and the 12 classes from two science teachers were divided into two game modalities: desktop and VR. Results indicate that low motivation students performed better in the VR condition than the desktop condition. Our qualitative data further reveals the potential instructional components contributing to the improved performance.
