Research interest in digital game-based second language learning has grown steadily since 2013. However, imitations in prior empirical studies have been noted related to design, theory, and methods. To address these limitations, the purpose of this design-based research study was to iteratively design a theoretically-grounded digital game-based second language learning intervention and formatively evaluate its usability and effectiveness. Specifically, this research focused on the extent to which the designed intervention was able to promote language-related episodes, a critical construct of language acquisition.
